Feb 23, 2018 /prREACH/ -- Did you know that about a third of all American adults think seriously about adoption, however, only about 2% of those individuals and couples actually do? Why is it that so few actually decide to move forward with the adoption process? The adoption professionals at Adoptions From The Heart believe that a large portion of those who are considering growing their family through adoption ultimately decide not to move forward due to common myths that have spread throughout the country.
The first common myth is that there simply aren’t enough infants in the United States available for adoption, putting pressure on prospective parents to seek international agencies, something they may not be comfortable with. However, the reality is that an average of 18,000 infants are adopted in the United States every single year, going directly from the hospital to their new home.
Second, many are under the impression that domestic adoption is a much more expensive option than international adoption, another myth that simply isn’t true. While the costs associated with adopting can range anywhere from $5,000 to $40,000, those expenses are typically the same regardless of where the family is adopting from.
In addition to this, many prospective parents have heard stories about applicants who had to wait years, sometimes even more than a decade, before they were matched with a child. Yet on average, once approved, the majority of adoptive parents are matched to their child in less than twelve months.
