Jan 18, 2014 /prREACH/ -- With approximately 1 in 7 Americans experiencing some sort of fear or anxiety about dental visits, Dr. Andrew Holloman, cosmetic and pediatric dentist in Clearwater, FL believes that sedation dentistry is the key to helping patients achieve happy, healthy smiles.

Dr. Holloman offers various methods of sedation at his practice, and has seen the difference it makes in encouraging patients to receive regular dental care. “For some patients, their fear or anxiety about the dentist is enough to completely avoid appointments altogether, or not get the regular treatments that are vital for a completely healthy smile,” said Dr. Andrew Holloman, cosmetic dentist in Clearwater, FL. “With sedation dentistry, our patients are able to have a dramatically improved experience at our office without feelings of stress or anxiety. And for many patients, we’re able to get more treatments done at once while still allowing them to feel comfortable.”

Dr. Holloman offers two variations of dental sedation at his office: nitrous oxide, also called “laughing gas,” and oral conscious sedation, also referred to as “relaxation dentistry,” or “sleep dentistry. Nitrous oxide is a perfectly safe, sweet-smelling gas that is administered to the patient throughout their treatment with a small over-the-nose mask. When inhaled, this gas produces feelings of tranquility and well-being, with some even describing it as a sense of giddiness.  Nitrous oxide treatments don’t produce any side effects, and the sedation effects wear off within about five minutes of treatment.

Oral conscious sedation is completed by providing the patient with a prescription prior to their treatment, such as Valium or Ativan. Patients simply take the pill 1-2 hours before treatment and have someone else drive them to and from the appointment. During their treatment, patients are less aware of sights, smells, sounds, and pain, but are still conscious and able to respond if necessary. Many patients who undergo oral conscious sedation don’t remember much, if any, of their appointment.

In addition to sedation dentistry, Dr. Holloman and his staff provide a variety of other services at their practice to help patients achieve and maintain peak oral health. Dr. Holloman is a qualified dental implants dentist in Clearwater, FL for patients with missing, broken, or failing teeth. He is also an emergency dentist in Clearwater, FL for those needing dental care outside of regular business hours.

Dr. Holloman completed his DDS degree at the University of Oklahoma College of Dentistry, graduating with honors. He then also completed an Advanced Education in General Dentistry residency at OU. Beyond his formal education, Dr. Holloman has also taken hundreds of hours of continuing education courses to ensure that he always provides his patients with the best level of care.
