Jul 15, 2014 /prREACH/ -- Dallas, TX family and cosmetic dentist Dr. Daniel Sena is encouraging parents to take a closer look at how they are helping their children implement healthy preventative dental habits beyond just regular dental appointments. With oral decay currently ranking as the number one preventative disease that affects children throughout the U.S., parents play a major role in either encouraging or discouraging healthy dental habits.

“Whether they realize it or not, parents are directly responsible for the oral health of their children, even when their kids are past an age when parents assume they are mostly independent,” said Dr. Daniel Sena, preventative dentist in Dallas, TX. “We’re encouraging parents of our young patients to be more involved in their kid’s oral hygiene habits so that they can help them set important habits that are vital for lifelong health.”

While regular semiannual cleanings and check-ups are important to catch oral decay in its earliest stages, the most important element of dental hygiene begins at home. Most children experience oral decay due to lack of brushing and flossing at home, as well as having high-sugar, high-processed diets. Not only does oral decay directly affect the health of the teeth, but in adult patients, those with oral decay have also been linked to have a higher likelihood of cardiovascular disease, diabetes, altered fetal development, kidney disease, and orthopedic implant failure.

According to Dr. Sena, many parents are more lax about oral hygiene for younger children because they assume that the teeth affected by decay will eventually be replaced by permanent teeth. However, gum health is just as vital for periodontal disease prevention; yet, many people are only concerned about tooth decay, more commonly referred to as cavities.

“We encourage all parents to start proper oral hygiene regimens as soon as their kids start cutting their first teeth, and to continue those habits with their kids even up until their early teen years,” said Dr.  Sena. “Many parents assume that their older kids are brushing and flossing as often as they tell them do, and that they’re doing it correctly, when in reality that’s not really happening. We tell parents to not be afraid to take an active role in their kid’s oral hygiene routines, and to not be afraid to actually brush and floss for and with their kids to make sure it’s happening correctly.”

In addition to being an experienced general dentist, Dr. Sena is also a highly trained  cosmetic dentist. He has his staff at Excel Dental offer a variety of treatments for children and adults, including general cleanings, fillings, and extractions, as well as teeth whitening and implants.

Dr. Sena is graduate of Baylor University and has been practicing dentistry for nearly 30 years. In addition to providing dental care to Dallas patients at Excel Dental, he also trains dental assistants and anesthesiologists who administer sedation services to dental patients.
