(prREACH) With oral decay being the number one preventable disease that affects children in the United States, Dr. Jerome Crayle is encouraging parents to take a proactive approach in their child’s oral health. In addition to bringing their children to regular cleanings and check-ups, Dr. Crayle believes there are several habits that can be implemented at home to ensure optimal oral health for kids.

“For the first several years of a child’s life, the state of their oral health is entirely up to the parents, whether they realize it or not,” said Dr. Jerome Crayle. “Most parents don’t recognize how hands-on they need to be with their child’s oral health at home, even past the point when they think their children are capable of taking care of it on their own.”

Optimal dental health involves both incorporating a healthful diet at home, as well as implementing proper brushing and flossing habits. Diets high in sugar and processed food are much more likely to produce decay and cavities in children at a very young age. Dr. Crayle also emphasizes how important it is for parents to ensure that their child’s teeth are being cleaned properly each day.

“We tell our parents to not be afraid to be hands-on, and to actually brush their children’s teeth for them up to a certain age,” said Dr. Crayle. “Many parents just assume that their kids are brushing their teeth correctly or as often as they tell them to, but in reality, they really aren’t.”

Dr. Crayle often points out to parents that taking just a few minutes each day to assist in their child’s oral care can save hundreds, or even thousands of dollars in the long run, in addition to a lot of stress and anxiety on part of the young patient.

Children who visit the dentist every six months can have their teeth effectively cleaned and examined so even in the event of a cavity, it can be detected and corrected in its earliest stages.

In addition to pediatric care, Dr. Crayle and his staff offer a variety of other general and cosmetic dentistry services.
