Aug 26, 2014 /prREACH/ -- Quincy, MA cosmetic dentist, Dr. Stephen Matarazzo, is helping cancer patients at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute in Boston, MA improve their success rates of stem cell and bone marrow transplants with free dental care. An estimated 80 percent of stem cell and bone marrow transplants for cancer patients fail due to undetected or untreated dental infections.

Many cancer patients who are in need of stem cell or bone marrow transplants are out of work and do not have insurance to cover necessary dental care, or just simply don’t have the funds to afford it. For these patients, Dr. Matarazzo provides possible treatments such as root canals, fillings, gum disease treatment, tooth extraction, and detection of dead teeth to ensure that each patient’s mouth is infection-free prior to the transplant procedure.

“This cause is very close to our hearts since my son, Michael, was treated by Dana-Farber in 2006 for Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia,” said Dr. Matarazzo. “Fortunately, Michael was cured and is now in remission, but so many other individuals and families at the Dana Farber Institute aren’t as fortunate. Providing free dental care for these patients is a very small, but essential, way that we’re able to give back to the dedicated nurses and doctors at Dana Farber.”

In the United States alone in 2009, nearly 12 million individuals had some form of cancer, approximately 350,000 of those being children. The Dana-Farber Cancer Institute was founded in 1947 to provide children and adults with the best treatment available for their respective cancers. Today, the Institute supports more than 300,000 patient visits each year and is involved in more than 700 clinical trials.

In addition to providing volunteer dental care, Dr. Matarazzo and his staff offer a wide range of general and cosmetic dental services at their practice. Dr. Matarazzo is a highly trained dental implants dentist for patients who have experienced tooth loss or currently have failing teeth. He is also a sedation dentist to provide a more relaxing and pain-free visit for his patients.

Dr. Matarazzo has been practicing dentistry for more than 35 years. He completed his undergraduate degree at Boston College and then graduated from Tufts University School of Dental Medicine. Beyond his formal dental education, Dr. Matarazzo has stayed heavily involved in post-graduate studies at the L.D. Pankey Institute and the Misch Implant Surgical Institute to ensure that he is able to provide his patients with the latest technology and time-proven treatments. He is also a Fellow in the International congress of Implantology.
