Sep 22, 2015 /prREACH/ -- Adult orthodontics is something that has been growing very quickly in the dental industry the past 5 years, historically, 5 to 10 percent of patients in orthodontic clinics were adult patients. The advent of Invisalign and some other clear cosmetic alignment options has opened the door for many more adults to have interests in orthodontic treatment. In the Owen Orthodontics office, the ratio is 50 percent adults and 50 percent kids.

Part of that reason is Owen Orthodontics has a huge focus on interdisciplinary treatment. Dr.Timock & Dr. Owen are both part of multiple interdisciplinary treatment planning study clubs that meet on a monthly basis throughout the year. One of the groups is comprised of specialists that include orthodontics, oral surgeons, periodontists, prosthodontists and general dentists. They consistently meet to learn  "How to approach an adult patient from not just the orthodontics perspective but a team approach with all specialists being involved." This gives a huge acumen towards being able to better serve and understand what options really exist from other specialists as well.

On top of that, one of the most fun things that has been integrated into the Owen Orthodontics practice has been adult lingual braces. These braces are “hidden” on the inside of the teeth. There are a few different options for the lingual braces. One option is the front teeth only, a method that typically takes anywhere from 4 months to 12 months to receive a really nice alignment of the front teeth. Another option is the full lingual braces, that allow the ability to fix any type of bite. These two options have really driven a lot of adults to the office. Dr. Owen is currently wearing lingual braces on the top and bottom teeth. No one even knows they are there. It is very easy to speak while wearing them, and are very comfortable to wear all day and night. The lingual braces are such a wonderful technology, and will give an adult a dream smile. Lingual braces allow that self-confidence to receive the smile without having others realize that braces are even on. Lingual braces have been a huge evolution in the right direction for the orthodontics world. Because of this new technology, Dr. Owen travels the world teaching other orthodontists how to properly install the adult lingual braces. The other big focus at Owen Orthodontics is treating temporomandibular joint disorders (TMJ). Dr. Owen has logged thousands of hours of additional training at The Pankey Institute, The Dyson Academy, at The Sphere Institute with Dr. Qyoce, and one on one with Dr. Tinokas. These gentlemen are some of the greatest TMJ minds in the world. With this amazing opportunity to go and learn from the industry masters, Dr. Owen has learned so much about how teeth fit together, how to make the teeth fit together appropriately, and for the jaw joints to be in the proper position. If the jaw joints are not appropriately positioned, there is a high potential for people to develop clicking, popping or have a progression of clicking, popping, and a lot of pain and dysfunction. This could debilitate people for years, until they could identify the source of that cause. Adult treatments have been a fun addition to the Owen Orthodontics office. To watch patients leave the office after the lingual braces have been removed, is the greatest reward an orthodontist can experience.
