At Mergen Orthodontics, clear braces are the standard for every patient. Depending on the patient’s needs, Dr. Mergen uses one of a variety of clear options for orthodontic treatment, including Damon Clear Systems, Invisalign, and ICE Inspire clear braces. All options are much less noticeable and oftentimes much less uncomfortable than traditional metal wires and brackets that are used to straighten teeth.
“We treat a large number of adult patients who either never had braces in their younger years, or actually did have braces at one point but experienced shifting teeth years after completing their treatment,” said Dr. Mergen. “Many of our patients put off getting orthodontic treatment sooner just because they didn’t want the traditional “metal mouth” image. However, now they love that clear braces really are barely noticeable, and don’t detract from their image.”
While most people assume that braces are only designed to straighten teeth, there are actually a variety of other conditions that braces can correct to ensure that the patient’s teeth wear properly and also avoid trapped food and bacteria as much as possible. Some of these other issues include crowded teeth and space problems, as well as an overbite, underbite, a cross bit, or open bite.
The Damon Clear and ICE Inspire products that Dr. Mergen offers both involve attaching individual clear brackets to the teeth that utilize one wire to correct the alignment and bite of the teeth. These procedures are used for patients who have more severe alignment or bite issues that need correction. Dr. Mergen also offers Invisalign treatment, which is a clear plastic aligner, or tray, that sits over the teeth virtually unnoticeably. The patient wears a series of these aligners during the course of treatment to gradually shift their teeth into place. Invisalign is typically used for patients with mild to moderate alignment issues.
Dr. Mergen has been practicing orthodontia for more than 15 years, and is also a highly trained pediatric orthodontist in Iowa City, IA.
